It appears the prefix 'N' on the narrow gauge codes may not have been applied at the start of the narrow gauge running, there is evidence in offical documentation of codes without the prefix. This would have caused confusion in official correspondence, and it seems that the codes were altered to include the prefix around the time of the official opening of the first narrow gauge railway. The exact date of the recoding is unknown.

About 6000 "I" wagons with various capacities from 8 to 20 LT were split by capacity:
"I" with a dual capacity of 11/16 LT were changed to "IA".
"I" with a capacity of 8, 10 and 11 LT were changed to "IB".
"I" with a capacity of 20 LT were changed to "IY".
"IG" with a capacity of 16 LT were changed to "I".

1956 - 'P' & Sundry
Passenger speed vans
Some vans had previously been fitted with high speed, passenger type bogies and were used in passenger train service, their code not reflecting the maximum speed.
In 1956, to segregate freight vehicles that had passenger speed capability, they were recoded with a "P".
Note: The mail baggage "TT" vans that were recoded "TP" only ran in service for about twelve months before being recoded "BP".
Note: "ZP" vans were only authorised for a maximum speed of 60mph

1961 - Std Guage
To provide rollingstock for the service to Sydney after the 1962 standardisation project, a number of carriages were converted to standard gauge.
Because the codes would have overlapped with existing New South Railways codes, the cars were reclassed.
The new codes were an approximation of appropriate NSW carriage codes, but with a "V" prefix to indicate the Victorian Railways as the owner.
Note: 1st Class AW became 2nd Class VFW.

1977 - Bogie Pool
All states were required to provide a percentage of bogies and parts to other states based on the percentage of bogie exchange vehicles in the interstate 'pool'.
To reduce the cost of providing bogies and equipment, VR/Vicrail reduce the number of bogie exchange ("X") wagons in service by reclassing some wagon to non interchange bogies ("F").
