Details
Incident details
A special cattle train, consisting of fourteen trucks, all heavily loaded, arriving at Essendon shortly after midnight. The driver states that when he got on top of the bank at Essendon the train became uncontrollable, although he had three brakes besides the van and engine brakes applied. The distant signal was burning with a dull light, but as soon as he saw it, he reversed the engine and opened both sand boxes, but the rails were too greasy to pull up in time. Ran into an empty passenger train that was standing at the Essendon platform
